Following are brief biographies of past presenters.



Deborah Bowman, Ph.D. is a Licensed Psychologist, Professor and founder of the Transpersonal Counseling Psychology and the Wilderness Therapy programs at Naropa University. She is co-author of the book, When Your Spouse Comes Out, soon to be published by Haworth Press. As an artist and photographer, she has had numerous gallery showings in Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming.

Deborah Bryon, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Denver, and a training candidate in the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts. She has studied Shamanism as a Jungian and with Shamans in Peru. In conjunction with her private practice, she is an artist and a member of Spark Gallery. Lyn Cowan Ph.D., Jungian Analyst has been a practicing Jungian analyst since 1980, Director of Training for the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts for six years and past president of the Society, held a Professorship for ten years in the doctoral program in Clinical Psychology at Argosy University (Minneapolis), and recently concluded two years of teaching and lecturing at the C.G. Jung Center of Houston, Texas. She is the author of three books: Portrait of the Blue Lady: The Character of Melancholy, Tracking the White Rabbit: A Subversive View of Modern Culture, and Masochism: A Jungian View.

Nancy Dougherty, LCSW is a Jungian Analyst in private practice in Naples, Florida. Nancy is a member of the teaching faculty of the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago, and a senior member of the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts. Along with her co-author, Dr. Jacqueline West, she has published The Matrix and the Meaning of Character: An Archetypal and Developmental Approach.

Elsbeth Pryer Diehl, C.A.P. (Certified Astrological Professional) has been a consulting astrologer for over 30 years, served as Executive Director of the Colorado Fellowship of Astrologers, VP/Program Director of Rocky Mountain Astrologers, and is a founding member of BFJ. Elsbeth and Robert are working on a book addressing Astrology, gnosticism, and the application of Astrology to counseling and psychotherapy.

Robert A. Diehl, M.A., C.A.P., is a Jungian-oriented psychotherapist practicing in Boulder/Denver since 1979. He holds credentials in both Counseling Psychology and Astrology. Robert currently serves as an adjunct faculty member at Naropa University where he teaches “An Introduction to Jung,” and is a founding Board member of Boulder Friends of Jung.  

Stephen Foster, Ph.D., M.A., Jungian Analyst, is a Diplomat Jungian Analyst, having graduated from the Interregional Society of Jungian Analysts—Denver Seminar. He has a master’s degree in counseling psychology from Regis University and is a Licensed Professional Counselor with a private practice in Boulder.  Stephen has been studying Jung since 1979, when he read Jung’s biography Memories, Dreams, Reflections.  Over this time he has developed a wide range of clinical interests including masculine psychology, early childhood trauma, dissociation and addiction. In addition to the Denver analysts, he has studied with many nationally recognized analysts including Chicago Analyst Robert Moore, New York Analyst Donald Kalsched and L.A. Analyst Joe McNair.  Stephen’s Jungian interests are alchemy, the interpretation of films and fairy tales, and the Nature Archetype, which stems from his environmental consulting work in the clean up of hazardous chemicals in the environment. Although he also holds a Ph.D. in organic chemistry and has conducted cancer research at Harvard, he believes in a relational rather than academic approach to analysis. However, Stephen’s “real world” experience in corporate and small business is invaluable when bringing Jungian psychology into everyday life with clients who are making difficult transitions.  Stephen is a founding member of the Boulder Friends of Jung.

Barbara Friedman, Ph.D., Jungian Analyst is also a certified addictions counselor and a certified Yoga instructor. She is the published author of “Partners in Healing: Redistributing the Power in the Counselor Client Relationship.” She is a founding member of the C. G. Jung Educational Center of Cleveland and has a private practice in Cleveland Heights, Ohio and Boulder, Colorado.

Irene Gerber-Münch, Jungian Analyst is in private practice in Küsnacht, Switzerland. She studied psychology and the history of religion at the University of Zürich, and trained in analytical psychology at the Research and Training Centre for Depth Psychology, where she has been a member of the board since 2004. Besides various works on fairytales from a Jungian point of view, she published an extensive interpretation of Goethe’s Faust. She has researched and given lectures on this topic for almost 20 years.

Betsy Hall, Ph.D., LCSW is a practicing psychotherapist in Arvada,  Colorado. She also teaches courses in Jungian Depth Psychology and Counseling Techniques as an Assistant Professor in the Graduate Counseling Program at Regis University. In 2004, she completed  a Doctorate in Mythological Studies with an emphasis in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. Betsy’s studies and teachings are particularly influenced by her interests in epic literature, the hero archetype, cultural and personal mythologies, and depth psychotherapy. She has over twenty years experience in providing training seminars and workshops to lay and professional communities. 

Bernice Hill, Ph.D., Jungian Analyst, is a Senior Training Analyst , a member of the C.G.Jung Institute of Colorado, of IAAP, and is in private practice in Boulder. She has given workshops for the International Society for the Study of Subtle Energy and Energy Medicine, The Monroe Institute and The Marpa Center at Naropa University, Boulder, Colorado. She is the author of “Money and the Spiritual Warrior.”

John Hitchcock, Ph.D., is a Jungian psychotherapist in private practice in Longmont. He is the author of four books on science and spirituality. Along with a university career teaching astronomy and physics, Dr. Hitchcock has, for over thirty years, been a leader with the Guild for Psychological Studies in San Francisco, specializing in mythology and science as myth. Dr. Hitchcock recently served on the Board of the Brunswick, Maine C.G. Jung Center where he taught courses on synchronicity and astrology, as well as on Jung’s life and ideas. He has given lectures and workshops on his books for over twenty years.  

James Hollis, Ph.D., Jungian Analyst trained in Zurich. He has a private practice in Houston, Texas and is the Executive Director of the Jung Educational Center of Houston. He is a Senior Training Analyst for the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts, and the author of twelve books, including the popular, Middle Passage.

Arthur C. Jones, Ph.D. is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Denver and the Founder and Chair of The Spirituals Project (www.spiritualsproject.org). He is the author of the award-winning book, Wade in the Water: The Wisdom of the Spirituals. Since 1991, he has presented national lectures and concert programs on the Black Spirituals.

Donald E. Kalsched, Ph.D., Jungian Analyst and a Clinical Psychologist. He is affiliated with the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts and the Westchester Institute for Training in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy in New York. He has a private practice in New York and New Mexico. His book, The Inner World of Trauma: Archetypal Defenses of the Personal Spirit, is a classic in the field. Don has lectured widely on this and other subjects related to Analytical Psychology.

Jeffrey Kiehl, M.A., LPC, Jungian Analyst has a practice in Boulder, Colorado. He is a founding member of the Boulder Friends of Jung. Jeffrey also has a Ph.D. in atmospheric science.

Kathryn Kuisle, Ph.D., Jungian Analyst is a graduate of the C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich and has a private practice in Colorado Springs. Kathryn teaches at the Einseideln Conference in Switzerland, facilitates study groups at the Jung Institute in Denver, and is an affiliate faculty member of Regis University.

Linda Leonard, Ph.D. Jungian Analyst is an author, and international lecturer. She graduated from the Zurich Institute in 1972 and became a founding member of the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts. Linda also trained in existential analysis with Medard Boss and won an American Council of Learned Societies Postdoctoral Fellowship to study the relationship between Jung and Heidegger. She is the author of several books including, The Wounded Woman: Healing the father-daughter relationship, which was published in several languages and a best-seller, On the Way to the Wedding: Transforming the love relationship, Meeting the Madwoman, Witness to the Fire: Creativity and the veil of addiction and Following the Reindeer Woman: Path of peace and harmony. This lecture will be based on her book The Call to Create: Celebrating acts of imagination. Joe McNair, Ph.D., Jungian Analyst is in private practice in Woodland Hills, California. He is currently a senior training analyst at the Los Angeles Jung Institute, and is their resident expert in Arthurian and Celtic legend and Alchemy. He trained in Zurich (1981-1987) and Los Angeles, and co-authored the book, Jungian Analysts: Visions and Vulnerabilities, with Marvin Spiegelman. McNair conducted a weeklong seminar on animal symbolism for the New England Jung Society.

Lara Newton, M.A., LPC, diplomate Jungian Analyst has a private practice in Denver who has been a therapist since 1982. Lara is currently coordinator of admissions and co-coordinator of training for the C.G. Jung Institute of Colorado, is a member of the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts, and is president of the Jung Society of Colorado in Denver. Her book, Brothers and Sisters: discovering the psychology of companionship, was published by Spring Publications in 2007.

Susan L. Olson, M.A., LCSW - Jungian Analyst received her diploma in Analytical Psychology from the C.G.Jung Institute in Zurich in 1992. A Founding member of the Georgia Association of Jungian Analysts, she is also a training analyst in the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts and has a private practice in Atlanta. She is currently writing a book on the subject of premonitory and bereavement dreams.

Nancy Ortenberg, M.A., LMFT, is a Jungian psychotherapist with a private practice in Boulder, Colorado. She has been in practice for over 25 years, has studied at both the Zurich and Los Angeles Jung Institutes, as well as with people like Joseph Campbell, James Hillman, and Marion Woodman, and is currently a Candidate with the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts.  She has been on the Board of Directors and has lectured for the C.G. Jung Society of Colorado, has been past President of and is on the Board of Directors of the Board of the Boulder Friends of Jung, and teaches Jungian courses at both Regis and Naropa Universities.     Nancy has a particular interest in working with dreams, myth, and the creative expression of the psyche through drawing, painting, sandplay, and writing.  In addition to individual and couples psychotherapy, for the past ten years she has been facilitating ongoing women’s dream groups.  Out of her private practice, as an instructor of therapists interested in Jung’s psychology, Nancy offers seminars on dreamwork and sandplay, as well as individual and group clinical supervision.

Paula MacKinnon, M.A.C.P.  is a  Diplomate Jungian Analyst and a member of the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts. After 10 years of private practice and being continually and patiently taught by her clients to see the light within each soul, she heeded the call to Zurich. Graduating in 1998 from the C.G.Jung Inst in Zurich, she practiced both in Zurich and Halifax, Nova Scotia. She has lectured at the Jung Institute in Zurich as well as presenting many lectures, workshops and weekend retreats in Nova Scotia. She is now in private practice in Boulder. 

James Palmer, Ph.D., did his undergraduate work at Dartmouth College and has his Ph.D. in English and Film from Claremont Graduate School. He has taught literature and film at CU for the past #*#* years and has received several teaching and service awards. A professor of Film Studies and a President’s Teaching Scholar, he has published numerous articles and co-authored The Films of Joseph Losey (Cambridge Press). Currently the Director of the Conference on World Affairs, he also teaches several interdisciplinary courses, including Jung, Film, and Literature.

Jennifer Phelps, MFA is a poet, writer and graduate of the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado.  She taught high school English and worked as a college administrator for her alma mater, Colorado College.  She published her first book, Grandmother God (Eyries Press), in 1998 and her poems have appeared in Monkey Puzzle Magazine and Green Fuse Press’ Poetry Saves! 2009.  In addition to writing poetry, she studies at the Colorado Jung  Institute.

Cindy Smock, M.A., LPC, CAC-III, Jungian Analyst  has a private practice in Denver and Gunnison. She is a certified addictions counselor and has been working in the field of addictions for twenty years. She also has had an enduring interest in Jung and Zen Buddhism and in how these two powerful traditions can communicate with each other.

J. Marvin Spiegelman, Ph.D., Jungian Analyst. Dr. Spiegelman earned his Ph.D. in psychology at UCLA in 1952 and the Analyst’s Diploma at the Zurich C.G. Jung Institute in 1959. He has been in private practice in the Los Angeles area ever since. While studying in Zurich, he taught at Hebrew University. Other Professorships include: UCLA for seven years, USC for ten years, and Pacifica Graduate School for five years. He was Visiting Professor at UCLA a few years ago, returning to Pacifica in Spring 2008. He has lectured internationally and authored ten books, co-authored six, and edited four, as well as some 80 articles and reviews. Nora Swan-Foster, MA, ATR-BC, LPC, Diplomate Jungian Analyst is a founding member of Boulder Friends of Jung and previous Publicity Chair. Nora holds a degree in English literature with an emphasis on creative writing from University of Wisconsin-Madison and in 1986 she earned a Masters in Expressive Arts Therapy from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. As a therapist, she has worked with all ages in a range of settings with both individuals and groups.

Nora’s interest in pregnancy began with her Masters thesis where she explored how art could facilitate the invisible prenatal emotional experiences, and in1989 she published a seminal publication that encouraged the use of art during pregnancy. She continued her pilot research under the IRB at Presbyterian St. Luke’s in Denver, and in 1996 published the results. Nora completed a thesis for her analytic training with the IRJSA (http://www.irsja.org/) entitled Pregnancy: a feminine initiation. She has also co- authored papers on group dynamics and contemplative education while on the faculty at Naropa University where she taught graduate level art therapy courses. In addition, she has led creative workshops on Jungian oriented topics such as fairy tales and active imagination.

Currently Nora has a full-time private practice in Boulder, Colorado with an emphasis on adults interested in reclaiming a more meaningful life. Nora came to the counseling field with a curiosity in the healing role of the symbolic world particularly when we are faced with un-worded and inexpressible emotions, which art, dreams, nature, writing, dance and music can so elegantly express. Within an analytic and counseling environment, Nora considers the therapeutic relationship and the imagination to be primary tools that move our psyche towards connection, individuation and a fullness of life. Robin van Löben Sels, Ph.D., Jungian Analyst studied in Zurich and graduated from the C. G. Jung Institute in New York. She is a member of the Inter-Regional Society of Jungian Analysts and maintains a small private practice. She recently moved from the East Coast and now lives in Newfoundland and New Mexico. Robin enjoys teaching in small groups in the United States and abroad and is the author of  A Dream in the World.

Leota Ann Voll, M.A., M.Div., M.A. is an Instructor of Religious Studies and a mentor in spiritual practice. Currently, she teaches courses on Contemplative Christianity at Naropa University, where she completed a Master’s degree in Contemplative Psychotherapy. She also holds a Master’s degree in literature from the University of Washington and a Master of Divinity from the University of Chicago Cluster. She was introduced to Jungian thought by Mircea Eliade, and during a variety of University posts, Leota Ann developed various Jungian approaches to teaching English, Humanities, and Religious Studies. Leota Ann combines contemplative retreat leadership with teaching and is certified as a spiritual director.
